Die Umgebung (The Outskirts)

For many photographers, the COVID-19 pandemic at the start of this decade marked a turning point in their perception of the landscape, as they were forced to turn their gaze and their cameras towards local landscapes, on the outskirts of their home towns.

For others, the realisation of the severity of the climate crisis led them to give up long journeys to exotic destinations in order to minimise their carbon footprint; consequently, they turned their gaze and their cameras towards their local landscapes, their outskirts.

In recent years, I have been fortunate to have these outskirts just a 15-minute walk from my front door. And these outskirts have always been, with or without a pandemic, the landscapes of my photographic excursions through which I have wandered – often alone, as is customary in landscape photography – in every season of the year and in all weathers.

On those excursions and walks on the outskirts of Schwalbach, I have walked past fields of grain and fruit trees, across meadows, along streams, and above all, I have wandered through the woods.

Although I have photographed these outskirts in every season of the year, my favourite seasons are autumn and winter, when snow and mist cover the landscape with a blanket of calm and silence and the world seems imbued with a serene nostalgia.

I felt that presenting the photographs in black and white best suited that subdued atmosphere of calm, silence and nostalgia.
